IN THE UNITED STATES, the ideas of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are no so obsolete, that they can be found only under glass in the Capitol Library. Their successor is a much more substantial value - money. Unlike such mushy ideas as liberty or happiness, dollars can be counted - every Joe Schmoe can easily find out if you are a somebody or a nobody by a yacht moored to your private pier, Rolex adorning your arm or a Hermes bag hanging from the oiled and manicured body of your trophy wife. You can also stop worrying about your self-worth - it’s easy: just look at that number in your bank account. How else are you going to measure your value as a human being? By joining the Peace Corps? Yeah, right. And, even if you ever feel like you need to “give back” - there is always philanthropy.
